What is Dunk Your Kicks?
It is estimated that 200 million pairs of athletic shoes (Sneakers) are discarded in landfills in this country each year. These sneakers often times have life and miles left in them. Each year 15,780 children (under age 19) in the United States are diagnosed with cancer. It is the number one leading cause of disease related death among children. In developing nations there are millions of people of all ages who do not own shoes. Footwear is extremely important in order to reduce trauma, hookworm and parasitic diseases that enter the bare foot. Proper footwear minimizes foot infections in the diabetic population, as well as to lower the risk for podoconiosis and Kaposi’s sarcoma.
The Max Cure Foundation’s Dunk Your Kicks campaign collects these sneakers, and then sells them to an international recycler of affordable clothing. They then resell the shoes as affordable footwear to developing nations. The Max Cure Foundation will receive up to $1.00 per pair based on the quality of sneakers collected which goes towards advancing The Max Cure Foundation’s Roar Beyond Barriers program providing financial support in the form of gift cards to low-income and military families who have children battling the disease.
Through the program MCF has, since November 2011, assisted over 100 families in 17 states throughout the U.S. where children are in active treatment for their cancers. The families are given gift cards from Walmart and Sam’s Club stores each month for necessities such as food and clothing. In addition the Foundation provides back to school supplies for school age children enrolled in our program and their siblings as well as an emergency fund budget used in the event the family experiences a financial emergency such as the inability to pay rent, electricity or vehicle repairs. To help beyond the sneakers, please consider making a donation.
